Common Central AC Problems.

There are so many different things that can go wrong with your air conditioning system that not only is it not funny, it could make you nuts trying to figure it all out.

At the same time, this would be a book, not a blog, if we attempted to name all possible symptoms of a central air conditioner problem.  So instead, let’s focus on a few of the most common symptoms and causes of central AC trouble.  That way, you’ll at least have some idea of what’s going on either with your system right now or perhaps down the road when it starts to lose some of its efficiency.

No Power

If your system simply won’t turn on, don’t despair.  The problem might simply be a faulty thermostat.  Before calling a service professional, however, first make sure your unit is receiving power by making sure it’s plugged in and then seeing if a fuse has blown or a circuit breaker tripped.

Only Warm Air is Coming from your Registers

Once again, something as simple as a clogged filter could be preventing your air from being properly cooled.  So for starters, check your filter and clean or replace it as necessary.  If that doesn’t solve the problem, check your outside condensing unit to see if it’s running.  If so, and your system still isn’t generating cool air, it’s time to call a professional.

Your System Frequently Turns itself On and Off

blogThis could actually be the result of poor system design.  If, for example, your AC system is too large for your home, it’s going to reach the cool temperature setting faster than a properly sized system, and then shut itself off.  Once the temperature falls below that point, the system will turn back on – and thus the endless cycle begins.  That in turn will put a lot of needless stress on your system and could shorten its expected lifespan by a considerable margin.  If, conversely, your system is running continuously, then the opposite could be true, i.e., it could be too small for your home.

Noisy Operation

And then there’s the air conditioning system that makes so much noise, you’re not sure if it’s worth the trouble.  What kinds of noise?  Well, a loud rattling is a frequent sign of poor installation.  Some of our customers have also called to report sounds of squealing.  These typically come from the system’s indoor component (the air handler), especially older models that are belt driven where the belt might have slipped or broken.

High Energy Bills

There’s no surer sign that your AC system needs professional attention than skyrocketing energy bills, especially when all other home electrical usage remains relatively constant.  Systems that have not been properly maintained and those with problem ductwork are just two of several possible causes.

Here’s one thing that these and other AC problems have in common:  Service Pros, Inc.  We provide ongoing maintenance and high quality repairs for all makes and models of residential AC systems, ductless AC systems, and heat pumps.  So give us a call for the help you need to restore cool and comfortable conditions inside your home.  For those of you visiting our website for the first time, you’ll be glad to know we provide 24/7 emergency repairs, too.
